Elliot Avis
Elliot Avis is a second-year Fellow Candidate with the Cook
Leadership Academy and is enrolled with the GVSU College of Education
in the Educational Specialist Program. Currently, he is a School
Support Specialist at the GVSU Charter Schools Office where he
provides coaching, professional development, and strategic support to
all of the 78 authorized GVSU charter schools across Michigan. A
native of Grand Rapids, Elliot started his career in Chicago as a High
School Special Education Teacher with Teach for America and held
various teacher leadership support and administrative roles in
Chicago. Elliot received a Master's in Public Policy and
Administration from Northwestern University and a Bachelor of Arts in
Political Science and History from Wittenberg University in
Springfield, Ohio where he was a four-year letter winner on the Men's
Lacrosse team. He is also a proud graduate of the National Outdoor
Leadership School and can be found spending his free time backpacking,
canoeing, biking, and skiing. He currently sits on the Board of
Directors of Camp Henry in Newaygo, Michigan and volunteers with the
National Ski Patrol as an Alpine Patroller at Crystal Mountain.
Elliot's wife, Meredith, is an ICU nurse at St. Mary's hospital. In
their free time, they can be seen on long walks on the northeast side
of Grand Rapids with their Golden Retriever, Moose.
