A native of Holland, MI, Dr. Alexis VanZalen holds bachelor degrees in organ performance and history from Lawrence University (Appleton, WI), as well as an MM in early music and a PhD in musicology from the Eastman School of Music (Rochester, NY). Alexis specializes in music of the Baroque period, having written her dissertation on the 17th c. French organist Guillaume-Gabriel Nivers and his work in Catholic musical reform. In addition to teaching at Grand Valley, she works in the field of church music around Grand Rapids.
