No. There currently is not a requirement for our police officers to live within a certain radius from the department.

Honesty and integrity are important values found in a police officer. If you are found omitting important information or being deceptive, you will be permanently disqualified from the hiring process. You must successfully complete a background investigation in order to continue in the hiring process.

No. All lodgeable arrests on or near the Allendale Campus will be housed at the Ottawa County Jail located at 12130 Fillmore St in West Olive, MI, and all lodgeable arrests on the Grand Rapids Campuses will be housed at the Kent County Jail located at 703 Ball Ave NE in Grand Rapids, MI.

The GVSU Police Department serves the Allendale Campus in Ottawa County along with the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office and Michigan State Police. The GVSU Police Department also serves the Grand Rapids campuses along with the Grand Rapids Police Department. 

Officers work cycles on either day, evening or overnight shifts for 10 hours per shift. Shifts are re-bid twice a year - in November to take effect in January, and in May to take effect in July. Day shift consists of 6 am-4 pm, evening shift of 4 pm-2 am and overnight shift of 8 pm-6 am.

Depending on the type of assignment, officers may apply for special assignments after 1 to 2 years of full-time employment. 

Employees of the GVSU Police Department are paid biweekly.

With a supervisor's approval, employees may enroll in Grand Valley State University courses tuition free. Eligible fees will also be paid by the University. Spouses, household members and eligible dependents of employees are eligible for a 50% reduction in tuition and eligible fees for Grand Valley State University courses.
