Dear Murray Family,
As a first-generation, low-income student, I had not imagined participating on a study abroad program during my time at Grand Valley. Therefore, I am tremendously grateful for your contribution and investment towards my study abroad experience in Limerick, Ireland during the semester of Fall 2013.
My sixteen weeks in Ireland taught me that no matter how much I think I know (whether through research or subjective personal experiences), to always strive for curiosity. This curiosity sparked my interest in access to education, which ultimately has allowed me to do undergraduate research about study abroad access and strive towards attaining a PhD in Sociology of Education. My Irish experience also gave me the opportunity to reflect on my own culture, resulting in a newfound appreciation for my Mayan heritage. Lastly, the memories and friendships I made while in Ireland are immeasurable and truly speak to the “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” that is study abroad.
Thank you for everything that you have done to promote and increase access to study abroad opportunities to underrepresented populations. I truly appreciate the support.
Best regards,
Irma Ramirez
