Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

Want to Use Scholarship on Teaching and Learning?

To access curated scholarship on teaching and learning (SoTL), please peruse our digital library through Zotero, featuring bibliographic information on each source as well as links to digital or hard copies available through the GVSU Library System.

We also recommend the Teaching Journals Directory, put together by Keenesaw State University's Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning. The director provides an "extensive list of external disciplinary and interdisciplinary journals in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) focused on undergraduate and graduate education at colleges and universities."

Want to Generate your Own Scholarship?

It is helpful to understand the difference between taking a scholarly approach to teaching and conducting scholarship of teaching and learning. Laurie Richlin's (2006) Blueprint for Learning draws the following distinction:

The Scholarly Teaching Process

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

  1. Identify big questions in a course
  2. Select teaching goals
  3. Design learning objectives
  4. Consult literature
  5. Choose and use learning experiences
  6. Conduct systematic observation and assessment
  7. Document observations
  8. Analyze results
  9. Obtain peer evaluation
  1. Take results from scholarly teaching process...
  2. Identify key issues
  3. Synthesize results
  4. Place results into context of knowledge base
  5. Prepare manuscript
  6. Submit for peer review
  7. Disseminate - publish and present

Utrecht Roadmap for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

Utrecht University's Centre for Academic Teaching and Learning developed a tool designed to enhance SoTL endeavors. As described in the Utrecht Roadmap for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (2024):

"In eight steps, you will be stimulated to think critically about the way you organise your teaching and what effect this has on your students' learning. Relevant information, tips and targeted questions will help you to transform your ideas into a practice-oriented research/evaluation in a structured way" (Utrecht University).
