Call for Proposals - 31st Fall Conference on Teaching and Learning
This year's conference will feature two main session types:
1). Morning concurrent sessions and
2). [NEW!] Lightning roundtable discussions in the afternoon.
We invite proposals for presentations/discussions/demonstrations that align with one or more of these areas. More information about each session type is provided below. Proposals only require providing the session type, 80 word abstract, and title through this webform. Proposals that involve multiple facilitators, staff and/or students are welcomed and priority will be given to Pew FTLC funded/supported projects.

Session Types
CONCURRENT SESSIONS (45-minutes)
The longer form of these sessions allows time for presenters to share their insights and allow time for Q&A. Seek active participation from attendees. Faculty and staff are invited to propose a session based on one or more themes below:
Equity-Minded Approaches: Meeting the needs of all students, multicultural approaches to course design, and/or honoring diverse ways of knowing.
Teaching Refresh: A hands-on session wherein participants can experience your classroom firsthand and learn how you are tackling one of the questions below. Each session will provide ~15min instructional demonstrations, followed by a debrief and Q&A
- How can I encourage students to contribute to class discussions?
- How can I make the most of small group activities in class?
- What are ways to establish an inclusive and welcoming learning environment?
- How can I better engage students with the syllabus?
- What are ways to have a productive dialogue on a challenging or controversial topic?
- How can I balance structure and flexibility in my course?
- How can I best assess and build upon students’ prior learning?
- What are ways to set the stage for experiential learning, whether in or outside of the classroom?
- How can I make the most of the fixtures and features in an active learning classroom?
- How can gamification of aspects of my course increase engagement and learning?
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. Have you conducted scholarship on your teaching and learning at GVSU? Share your teaching-based research insights!
LIGHTNING ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSIONS (15-minutes, several rounds)
These shorter form roundtables offer a great opportunity to briefly share your ideas and engage in active discussion. Facilitators will present on a topic below for approximately 5 minutes and then invite table participants to discuss. After 15 minutes of discussion, participants will leave your table to explore another topic, and a new round of folks will join you.
Faculty Well-Being: Share what you do to promote balance and well-being. How are you taking care of yourself? Topics could include, but are not limited to: setting boundaries with students, grading efficiently and effectively, making the most of office hours, and practicing mindfulness.
My Favorite Assignment or Assessment: Have a cool assignment you want to share? A unique way to assess student learning?
Teaching and AI. What kind of language are you including in your syllabus or assignment prompts to communicate your expectations about engaging with AI? How are you addressing equity concerns?
Relationship-Rich Education: How do you cultivate meaningful relationships with students? What do you do to welcome students into your classroom?
Other: Propose your own focus!
