Recreation & Wellness (RecWell) offers a wide variety of recreational, wellness, competitive, and educational resources that support your physical and mental well-being. We provide inclusive and diverse recreational opportunities that inspire participation, promote health and wellbeing, and encourage student development and success.

RecWell Student Staff - Summer 2020


  • One-on-one or group lessons 
  • Learn to swim or improve existing swim skills 
  • Develop fundamental skills while building confidence in the water 
  • Hands-on training to teach participants lifesaving skills 
  • Intended for individuals to use in the workplace and schools
  • Classes combine lecture with interactive video demonstrations featuring emergency scenarios that are likely to occur in a variety of environments.
  • Drop-in classes led by a certified Group Exercise Instructor

Wellness Coaching

We can assist each student client by providing access to accurate wellness and lifestyle information, helping students explore new behaviors/skills, and identifying useful campus and/or community resources.

Outdoor Adventures

  • Free drop-in climbing for students 5 days a week
  • No experience necessary
  • Equipment provided
  • Education opportunities on rock climbing, hiking, camping, & wilderness medical skills.
  • Primarily for novice to intermediate level skills.
  • Basic backpacking gear rentals include tents, backpacks, sleeping bags, hiking stoves, & more.
  • Affordable rates.
  • Available to GVSU students and staff.
  • Mainly hiking & climbing trips appropriate for individuals with little to no previous experience.
  • Equipment provided as necessary.
  • Locations have included: U.P. Michigan, Arkansas, Wisconsin, Utah, Tennessee, & more!

Rec Center

  • Free access as a student with GVSU ID
  • Rec Center hours vary by semester
  • 95,000 total square feet with equipment checkouts, office suites, multiple weight rooms, an instructional fitness studio, men's & women's locker rooms, a gender inclusive locker room, various sport courts, multipurpose courts, and a large functional training space 


Yes! The RecWell department typically hires ~120 students each semester. Jobs range across all functions of the department, including Fitness & Wellness, Outdoors, Sports, Administrative, and Marketing. Job descriptions are posted on our website ( To apply, simply complete the Employment Application on the job you’re interested in.

We no longer offer long-term bike rentals. If you are in need of a low-cost option, we recommend inquiring at the GVSU Surplus Store.

Our location at the Ravines Center offers free self-service maintenance. We have bike stands, tools, and a small assortment of new & used parts. For more involved repairs or repairs you would rather have someone else do, visit our website for nearby options

Yes, we have basic camping equipment available for rent.

Outdoor Adventures trips are currently available to GVSU students only.

In order to remain within the user capacity, open climb times require registration/ reservation via the IM Leagues app. Open climb remains free for GVSU students.

On GVSU’s Allendale campus, there's the Ravines trails, Tower trails and the Grand Ravines Park adjacent to campus! Near GVSU’s Allendale campus, there's Aman Park, Bass River Rec area, & Millennium Park!

IM Sports are competitions between GVSU students, faculty and staff. IM Sports participants typically play one game per week per sport.

Club sports are more competitive, and require more commitment and cost more. Learn more about Club Sports on the Club Sports FAQ page.

Cost for IM Sports is typically between $15-$30 a semester, depending on the number of sports played.

Yes, registration is by team, so we encourage people to get their friends together to make a team. The number of people needed varies per sport. Sport rules can be found on the website (

To get a personal trainer, please submit the interest form, also located on our website. 

We aren’t not currently offering in person certifications per the American Red Cross guidelines. We are working on offering virtual classes through the American Red Cross.

Yes, there are men’s, women’s, and gender inclusive locker rooms within the Rec Center. 

At this time, we are planning that the lockers room will be open and available this Fall. Specific social distancing guidelines will be posted and must be followed throughout all areas of the facility including locker rooms.    

The GVSU pool is open daily to students, faculty/staff, community members, and guests during specific open and lap swim times. Please pay close attention to our website for specific pool facility hours.
