Yasmin Alemayehu is a first-year Cook Leadership Academy Fellow and
an undergraduate student enrolled in Elementary Education with an
Emphasis in Applied Linguistics. Yasmin is currently an ESL
Interventionist at a local elementary school within the Grand Rapids

through a curriculum that uplifts students that face injustices and
inequalities. Passionate about education, human rights, and advocacy,
Yasmin has presented "Disrupting the Whiteness within the
Education System" at GVSU's Teach In, and plans to present this
coming year. Yasmin is co-founder of Educators of Color Network
student organization and holds the role of Community Outreach
Coordinator. At GVSU, Yasmin is also a part of the McNair Scholars
Program and the Frederik Meijer Honors College with hopes of
furthering her research revolving around linguistic discrimination and
injustices within the education system. This past semester, Yasmin had
the opportunity of being WGVU's first education intern to help further
develop an inclusive and equitable set of resources for families
within West Michigan, and plans to continue her internship this year.
Yasmin deeply enjoys reading and listening to crime podcasts in her
free time alongside traveling around the world visiting 7 countries
this past year. With a sincere love of advocacy and intercultural
communities, Yasmin hopes to further develop her leadership skills
through learning from different perspectives and individuals she will
meet this school year.
