1. CLAS Voyage

Highlights

Several CLAS Voyage and CLAS Assessment Team members engaged with Jillian Kinzie in a small group discussion on Wednesday following her FTLC Student Success Series conversation on the NSSE data. We had the opportunity to get feedback on our system and structure and to brainstorm some of the outstanding considerations as we continue to design the Voyage. Dr. Kinzie is very excited for our efforts and re-iterated that when implemented well, our model of HIPs will support closing equity gaps for students across all groups. She has offered to remain in contact with us as we consider assessments and design elements for the Voyage.

CLAS sent several participants to the 2023 AAC&U Annual Meeting. There, we heard about the dire need to continue to increase awareness of the value of a liberal arts and sciences education and its far-reaching flexibility. We are excited to see many other institutions engaging in similar work to foundationalize HIPs, and we made several connections across the country in support of that effort.

While at AAC&U, the CLAS Voyage team attended an event for GVSU alumni in the Bay Area, where we discussed the Voyage. The alumni in the room indicated broad excitement and support, and several offered to connect with CLAS as we further develop opportunities for our students. We would like to have faculty and CCEL staff connect with alumni at these kinds of events in the future.

Action Items:

A reminder that CCEL will pay for the development of pilot student learning communities or embarking experiences over the summer. Please follow this link for applications for the Voyage Summer 2023 Pilot Development, due February 2nd.

2. Phased Retirement Program

Grand Valley has reinstated the Phased Retirement Program for Faculty and full-time EAP staff. Staff must submit the request to the Dean’s Office at least two months prior to the proposed start date. Faculty must submit their request with a completed workload plan to the Dean’s Office by February 15. If there are questions, staff should contact Michelle McCloud ([email protected]) and faculty should talk to Donovan Anderson ([email protected]).

3. Opportunities for Community-Engaged Learning and Writing Support

Michigan State University’s Office of Community Engagement is offering some events that may be of interest to those of you that participate in community-based learning and engagement. See below for the information.

Spring Break Community-Engaged Writing Retreat--March 6, 7, & 8, virtual or in person, Michigan State University

Join us for 1, 2, or 3 days of dedicated time and space for writing. You may attend virtually (free) or in person ($25/day). Writing Center consultants and staff from University Outreach and Engagement will be available to consult with you on your writing projects, as needed. We'll start each day with a check in on writing goals and wrap up each day celebrating your writing success. Summer Intensive in Community Engaged Scholarship--June 5-9, 2023, in person, Michigan State University

Join colleagues from around the country for a week-long intensive on community-engaged scholarship. Through workshops, site visits, case studies, panels, and planning sessions, you'll have the opportunity to learn about the fundamentals of community engagement, including foundational scholarship, partnership practices, and career success strategies. Registration is $550 for MSU folks and $650 for non-MSU folks. Applications due April 7, 2023.

Consider sending a team to the Summer Intensive. Last year, several institutions did that, which created momentum on their home campuses when they returned.

4. Student Award for Faculty Excellence Recipient

Congratulations to Michelle Miller-Adams of the Political Science Department as the recipient of the Student Award for Faculty Excellence (SAFE). The award is voted on by the GVSU Student Senate, and she is among an elite group of faculty to have received this honor over the past three decades. She will be recognized at the President’s Ball on January 27.
