Pre-Requisite Courses





Radiologic and Imaging Sciences Pre-requisites

All application materials are due by February 1 (NEW deadline)

To be considered for admissions to any of the emphasis areas within the Radiologic and Imaging Sciences program (formerly Medical Imaging/Radiation Sciences), one must complete the following courses prior to the start of the program:

PROGRAM PRE-REQUISITES

BMS 202 - Human Anatomy / Physiology                            (or option of BMS 290 & 291)

BMS 208 - Human Anatomy

BMS 309 - Human Anatomy Lab

HPR 100 - Medical Terminology                                 (formerly HPR 380 and HPR 111)

MTH 122 - College Algebra

MTH 123 - Trigonometry                                             (required as a prerequisite for GVSU's PHY 220)

PHY 220 - General Physics I

PHY 221 - General Physics II    NEW                                   Required for students admitted to GVSU F09 & later  Recommended for students admitted to GVSU prior to F09

PSY 101 - Introductory Psychology

SOC 280 - Social Problems

SS 300 or PSY 300 or HPR 301 or BMS 301              Research Design (NEW options)

STA 215 - Introductory Statistics

WRT 150 - Strategies in Writing

RECOMMENDED for Radiation Therapy applicants:             SS 381 - Death and Dying or PSY 364 - Life Span Dvlpmt

Emphasis areas in the Radiologic and Imaging Sciences major include:

  1. Radiation Therapy
  2. Diagnostic Medical Sonography (Two Concentrations)
    1. General Concentration - Abdominal and Obstetrics-Gynecology
    2. Echocardiography Concentration - Adult Echocardiography and Pediatric Echocardiography or Vascular Sonography
  3. Radiologic & Imaging Sciences - national registration in  an RIS field required)

Application Materials:

  • Application
  • Resume: include documentation of healthcare experience (volunteer or paid) and   2-3 hour RIS job shadow
  • One to two page statement of professional goals
  • Two letters of recommendation on RIS specific forms (see application)
  • Official copies of all transcripts -  send directly to the College of Health Professions(GVSU transcripts not required)

Admission Consideration:

  • Academic grade point average from prerequisite courses - 3.0 minimum (40%)
  • Academic grade point average from previous two calendar years (10%)
  • Evaluation from a personal interview (15%)
  • Evaluation from a professional writing sample, written during the interview(15%)
  • Completion of 16 hours of documented work or volunteer time in a health field (5%)
  • Two letters of recommendation on GVSU forms (5%)
  • Additional considerations (10%)

Students who meet the admissions/application criteria will be contacted for an interview and on-site writing sample in February. 
Admission is competitive. Program emphasis class size limit based on clinical availability.
