Student Safety During COVID-19

Our Commitment

During this unprecedented time, the Fred Meijer Center for Writing and Michigan Authors wants to reassure you that while the safety of faculty, staff, and students is at the forefront of our minds, we are still here and ready to collaborate with you. Whether it be an essay, resume, research paper, dissertation, or blog post, we will do our best to meet you where you are.

We look forward to continuing our mission of supporting you and your writing, and we hope to see you soon!

Safety Procedures

In response to COVID-19, the Writing Center's physical locations will be following safety and cleaning procedures in order to help protect the campus community as well as our staff. The Writing Center will be adopting:

  • Frequent cleaning of surfaces, technology, and consulting spaces
  • Face coverings are optional for all faculty, staff, and students entering a Writing Center location (disposable masks are available upon request)
  • Due to capacity concerns, you may be asked to leave the writing center space after your consultation has ended

We will continue to update our cleaning and safety procedures in reflection of GVSU's policies and as we see fit in order to best protect all individuals using our services.

Here to Help You

The Writing Center is here and ready to meet you where you are! We have a variety of online service options including virtual drop-ins, appointments, and email consultations that can be accessed through our scheduling system, Book It.

For more information, you can visit our Online Services page or browse through the information to the right.

Through our online Drop-in service, our Writing Center staff is here to help you whenever and wherever you are.

During our open hours, you have the availability to join in our virtual drop-in queue whenever you'd like to meet with a writing consultant and receive feedback on your project. This service is first-come-first-served, but our consultants do their best to meet with you as soon as possible.

Simply log into your Book It account and select "Virtual Drop-In" on the top navigation bar and you will be able to meet with a consultant through the "Enter Appointment" button in Book It, or through an email your consultant will send you at the beginning of your consultation.

Are you looking to receive feedback on your project but have a busy schedule? The Writing Center offers online appointments through Book It that lets you schedule the day, time, and consultant you'd like to work with.

At the time of your appointment, all you have to do is log back into Book It and check in; once the "Enter Appointment" pops up, you can join your consultant in a Google Meet room and begin your consultation.

Log into Book It today and select "New Appointment" to schedule your next virtual consultation!

If you are unable to meet a consultant for a virtual, synchronous consultation, the Writing Center offers asynchronous Email Consultations.

Email Consultations are available to everyone. Submit your project through Book It and a consultant will return your paper with embedded feedback within 72 hours. If you submit a paper outside of our regular operating hours, the 72 hours will begin once our services open the next scheduled day.

Our Writing Consultants spend one hour reading/reviewing your paper and they will not edit it, but they will provide feedback on the concerns you note in the form, as well as note any other areas of concern relating to organization, depth of analysis, grammar, and more.

Book It requires a permission in your account in order to have access to Email Consultations. Please fill out an Additional Services Request form or contact Patrick Johnson, Writing Center Director ([email protected]) with any questions or concerns.

For more information, visit our page on Email Consultations.
