Summary: GVSU’s 2025 Assessment Conference brought the campus community together to explore forward-thinking, student-centered approaches to assessing learning and program effectiveness. The conference began with a keynote from Dr. Sean Lancaster, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, and continued with a strong slate of faculty and staff presentations. Speakers included Julie Henderleiter, Chair of the University Assessment Committee; Mostafa El-Said, founding Chair of the Department of Computer Science; Lara Jaskiewicz, Associate Professor and Director of the MHA program; and Vince St. Germain, Senior Instructional Design Specialist, among other campus leaders. Sessions showcased innovative assessment approaches, from partnering with students and simplifying SLOs and SCOs in student affairs to evaluating academic support initiatives, developing impactful internship portfolios, and using Blackboard and EAC tools for competency-based assessment and accreditation reporting. Participants engaged in workshops and round-table discussions to exchange strategies, strengthen assessment plans, and further connect assessment to student learning, equity, and continuous improvement. This collaborative event reinforced GVSU’s ongoing commitment to reflective, evidence-based, and student-centered assessment practices.
