Cash Cart: Student Philanthropy Week In celebration of Student Philanthropy week, we’re putting our own Laker spin on the Cash Cab game show! University Development will be driving a golf cart around campus on Wednesday, October 11 and quizzing Lakers on their GVSU philanthropy knowledge. Winners will have an opportunity to choose which of the featured student organizations receives an extra “cash” donation.

Laker Photo Collage Challenge: Student Philanthropy Week Stop by the Kirkhof Center on Friday, October 13 from 1-3 p.m. for the Laker Photo Collage Challenge. For a $5 donation, Lakers can take a polaroid selfie which will be a small but important part of a large GVSU mural. When we all come together as a community, we can do big things! Edible Insects: A History of Bugs as Food APPROVED INT 100/201
Although they are consumed worldwide to this day, insects are not usually considered food in Western societies. Tying together ancient history with our modern lives, Julie Lesnik points out that insects are highly nutritious and a very sustainable protein alternative. She believes that if we accept that edible insects are a part of the human legacy, we may have new conversations about what is good to eat—both in past diets and for the future of food. At the conclusion of the talk, audience members will have the chance to sample some edible insects. Julie Lesnik is a biological anthropologist at Wayne State University. Her research on insects includes the publication, Edible Insects and Human Evolution (2018, U of Florida Press). She has shared her findings in media outlets, most notably on NPR's Code Switch, and she gives talks on this topic to general as well as academic audiences.

Environmental Injustice and its Effects on the Communities of Grand Rapids The community of Grand Rapids is like no other local community. It holds important pieces of history for locals of all backgrounds. It also suffers from several forms of environmental injustice, such as vapor intrusion and access to fresh, safe, healthy, and affordable food. Seminar: Roots, rots and revolution: Shifting ecosystem states through below-ground ecology Presented by Chris Blackwood, PHD. Professor of plant, soil and microbial sciences at MSU. Christopher Blackwood speaks about research in his lab "Research in my lab examines ecology and evolution of plants and microorganisms, with a focus on below-ground interactions. Understanding the ecology of soil organisms is critical for predicting future ecosystem conditions and developing management strategies for sustainability. We are particularly interested in the critical roles of soil-plant-microbe interactions in shaping plant communities, ecological processes and soil-carbon dynamics.” |

Grand Valley State University Presents Bestselling Author Robin Wall Kimmerer Robin Wall Kimmerer is a mother, scientist, decorated professor, and enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. She is the author of the New York Times bestselling collection of essays Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants as well as Gathering Moss: A Natural and Cultural History of Mosses. Kimmerer is a 2022 MacArthur Fellow. She lives in Syracuse, New York, where she is a SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor of Environmental Biology, and the founder and director of the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment.
