Admissions
Have any admissions questions related to your application, I-20, financial verification form, Laker Portal, etc.? Contact [email protected]!
Visa Application
We will begin sending letters in August. The deadline to request a letter is AUG 8 at 11:59pm.
Housing
Living on-campus is proven to help you do better academically and socially and provides added security. You will transition into the community better and make the most of your time here!
You need to organize your housing BEFORE you arrive to GVSU. We don't have any temporary accommodations, unfortunately.
- Check out on-campus options (international students should look at transfer & graduate options).
- Review housing rates.
- Consider location: Pew Campus is downtown Grand Rapids (graduate courses) while Allendale Campus is the main campus and has the rec center & most social activities.
- PLEASE NOTE: all freshman (first semester at any college in the world) are required to live on-campus.
- You will have to pay a housing deposit of $150.00 when you apply.
- See arrival information for the earliest date you can move into GV Housing.
Make sure you apply as a transfer student! If you apply as a freshman you will be forced to live in freshman housing which mandates a meal plan and does not include shared living space or a kitchen.
Although we do not recommend this, living off campus can be much more affordable. This requires much more work on your part and we are not able to assist in organizing off-campus housing.
Here are some options to look into:
- The GVSU website has some nearby housing options.
- Bayberry and Apple Ridge which are located halfway between downtown and Allendale. This is a convenient location as it takes about 15 minutes to get to either campus and the route 50 bus (GVSU campus connector running every 6 minutes) has stops near both apartment complexes
- Craigslist is a website where you can list things for sale, apartments for rent, etc. BE CAREFUL as this is not a vetted site, which means anyone can list here. You should at least Skype with them before making any decisions! I have had several friends find rooms in a house this way but it does put more responsibility on you since there isn’t a company overseeing the site or individual listings. It's practically the wild west!
- Show me the rent.com
- Off-campus Housing List is a brochure our office created detailing some of the popular options near or between campuses
Consider the following questions:
- What is the monthly cost?
- Are utilities included? (additional costs for gas, electricity, garbage, internet)
- Is it furnished? (most places you must bring your own bed, tables, chairs, even refrigerator sometimes!)
- Is there a required security deposit? How much is it?
- Do you need to pay rent in advance?
- Do you need a US Social Security number?
- Does the property manager require a background check?
- Will you have to sign a lease? What are the dates on the lease?
- Where is it located? How long will it take me to get to classes?
Registration
You will need to register in MyBanner using your username and password: https://www.gvsu.edu/banner
Your program requirements are available here: https://www.gvsu.edu/gs/masters-and-doctoral-degree-programs-9.htm
Your Graduate Program Director will help you, learn who your program's Director is here: https://www.gvsu.edu/gs/masters-and-doctoral-degree-programs-9.htm
YOU HAVE TO SIGN UP FOR DOMESTIC STUDENT ORIENTATION IN ORDER TO CONNECT WITH YOUR ACADEMIC ADVISOR. You have received an email from admissions inviting you to sign up. You are not expected to attend physically. We understand this is confusing! Please make sure you sign up for the date offered to you so your academic advisor is able to reach out to you.
Please check your emails regularly for information from your academic advisor. Make sure to please check all inboxes you have (personal, GVSU) and the Spam folders!
Registration tips:
- Your advisor knows best--follow their advice! We know you're smart, but they're pros at this. Plus for undergraduates you HAVE to meet with them before registration is open.
- Register as soon as you can. Since courses often reach capacity, you might have to take a class in a different semester or at a time of day that isn't best for you. Take note of the waitlist and override options in the presentation.
- There is no fee to register for courses.
- You can change your schedule up until the first Friday of classes.
- If the class you really want is full, register for a back-up course as recommended by your advisor while they try to get you into the course you LOVE!

Health Insurance
LewerMark Health Insurance
GVSU has a mandatory international student insurance policy that is brokered by the company LewerMark.
Arrival & Orientation
Arrival & Orientation
Because of the number of students we are expecting to welcome and the many different housing arrangements they have, we are unable to provide airport transportation or coordinate it on your behalf. There are many safe options, including but not limited to:
- a local taxi company such as Metro Cab (616) 827-6500 or Yellow Cab (616) 459-4646 (costs $60-70)
- a transport app such as Uber or Lyft (cost varies)
Recommendations & Reminders:
- We do not recommend students use public transportation from another city (Chicago, Detroit etc) to get to Grand Rapids.
- You cannot enter the US more than 30 days prior to your program start date (listed on your I-20/DS-2019).
- August 29 is the very last day for new/first semester international students to join GVSU in-person; all students arriving later than this should work with Int'l Admissions [email protected] to defer to the next full semester (Fall 2025).
All students who will be living on the GVSU campuses for Fall 2025 are invited to use our move-in service. Our International Student Services (ISS) staff will be excitedly waiting at the iHouse to greet all students moving onto campus. The team will assist students in moving into their rooms and also take them to a local supermarket to shop for essentials for their first few days. To take advantage of this service, students must arrive to the iHouse during the designated arrival date and time:
- August 15 through August 17 between 12:00pm (EST) - 6:00pm (EST).
The deadline to sign up is TBA.
Sign-Up for On-Campus Move-In
Students who arrive earlier than the designated arrival date MUST organize their own temporary accommodation. GVSU does not have any temporary accommodation.
International Student Orientation Facts:
- Date:
- August 18-21, 2025
- iStudent Orientation is AMAZING!
- iStudent Orientation is MANDATORY!
- There is a compulsory fee of $150 USD
- This is NOT the same as the domestic student orientation; we cover important information about immigration regulations, social security applications, cultural differences, and much more!
- Graduate students should follow all of International Student Orientation - there are specific sessions included in International Student Orientation for Grads to meet with the graduate school
Fall 2025 earliest arrival date into the U.S. is July 18. International Student Orientation (graduate and undergraduate) is August 18-21, times TBA.
General Information
When to apply:
You will be able to apply for your visa as soon as you have received your I-20, paid the required SEVIS fee at www.fmjfee.com, AND the US Embassy in your country has opened for non-immigrant visa appointments. Please check the US Embassy website in your country for details: www.state.gov
Issues applying on time:
Please email GVSU Admissions [email protected] for details on how to defer or apply for a future semester at GVSU.
Recommendations for the interview:
Be prepared to show that you are academically and financially a strong candidate to enter the US. You must be able to convince the Visa Officer that your specific degree at GVSU will make a difference in your future in your home country. We believe that finances will be heavily scrutinized during this time.
Detailed process and advice can be found on the Visa Advice powerpoint on the Get Ready page.
Documents:
Keep all important documents with you at all times. This includes passport, I-20, flight itinerary, prescriptions, insurance cards, etc. Do not put these items in your checked bags. They should be with you.
Prescriptions:
If you are bringing any prescription drugs to the United States, you must bring an English translation of the prescription with them. Keep these with you in your carry on (not in your checked bag). In case prescriptions are needed while you are here your insurance carrier LewerMark will be able to assist with questions about refills.
Communication:
Let your family know it might take up to 24 hours after your planned arrival time to get in touch with them. Reassure yourself and your family that even if it takes longer than expected, you will be in touch as soon as you can!
We highly recommend new students fly into Grand Rapids airport: Gerald R. Ford International, code GRR. Flying into a larger airport such as Chicago or Detroit and then taking public transportation is not recommended.
The Grand Rapids airport is small with a helpful information desk, only 5 baggage carousels, and taxi services on-site.
Suggested Airport Transportation Options
Students living on or off-campus should organize their own transportation using:
- a local taxi company such as Metro Cab (616) 827-6500 or Yellow Cab (616) 459-4646 (cost varies, review cash and card options)
- a transport app such as Uber or Lyft (cost varies - need to download in advance, review cash and card options)
- A trusted local resource V's Anytime chauffeur service LLC, 616-406-9664
Buses and trains are not an option from the Grand Rapids airport. Please be prepared by booking your transportation to your accommodation in advance or waiting for a taxi upon arrival.
US Customs and Immigration requires anyone entering the USA with $10,000 USD cash or more to declare this money with Form FinCEN 105 when entering the country. If you intend to pay your tuition with cash, please instead consider sending the money via Convera instead or bringing a demand draft. These are much safer methods. If you do not declare the money you are bringing with you, you may be fined and all the money may be seized (taken away permanently).
We recommend you purchase a pay-as-you-go plan upon arrival. After you have received your Social Security number, you will be able to purchase a service contract for your cell phone. Cell phone carriers will be on campus during the required International Student Orientation.
GVSU On-Campus Housing
We encourage you, as an international student, to live on-campus. Visit the Grand Valley Housing website to apply. When applying, use the transfer application to gain access to apartment style options which include kitchens. Students who apply as freshman are required to live in dorm-style units. Laker Village is strongly recommended since most international students live in this community, it is at the midway price point, and it is home to the International House. Students will need to provide a home address if possible. If the application will not accept your address, please use the Padnos International Center address: Padnos International Center, 130 LOH Allendale, MI 49401.
Off-Campus Housing
If on-campus housing does not fit your needs, off campus housing is also available. In addition to the linked page, the ISS Team has put together this list of off-campus apartments near our Allendale, Health, and Grand Rapids/Pew Campuses:
Please note, living off-campus requires students to be entirely responsible for their housing situation--we have limited ability to support students who choose off-campus housing.
Undergraduate students will be contacted by their academic advisor in May or June (for FALL) or November (for WINTER) to register for classes. Be sure you respond to emails in a timely manner, as it is important to have a set class schedule before arriving to Grand Valley.
Graduate students should contact their own academic advisor in May or June (for FALL) or November (for WINTER). All students should have their classes before international student orientation. There will be a chance during orientation to make last minute changes, but you should have a solid schedule by the time you arrive to Grand Valley.
By purchasing a meal plan through the university, you are allowed a certain number of meals per week to be used at any on-campus dining locations. Meal plans may be purchased through the Laker Food Co. website. More information can also be found in the Understanding GVSU Meal Plans document.
To connect with other international students at Grand Valley through ISS, we recommend you follow GViStudents on Instagram. Visit Laker Link to find student organizations you may be interested in joining.
GVSU no longer requires students, faculty or staff to be vaccinated. Standard vaccinations are still recommended (Tuberculosis, Polio, Tetanus, MMR, Varicella, etc). Recommended vaccines are available at the GVSU Family Health Center.
Due to federal regulations at health care organizations, students in health and health-related programs who have placements will still be required to receive the COVID vaccine or follow the exception process outlined on the health compliance website.
All international students are required to purchase our mandatory health insurance through LewerMark. This page on our website has more information about it.
New International Students are required to pay the full balance of their Student Account by the payment deadline at 5:00pm EST; payment plans are possible the first semester. Log into MyBanner to view your student account. Please note that accounts are not billed tuition until after students have registered for courses.
Details on payment methods are on the Tuition page.
