Sequence Spotlights

Can you talk about your professors for this course?

Dr. Vélez Ortiz and Professor Giles are absolutely two of the sweetest, most respectful and intellectual professors I have had in my many years of schooling. Their open mindedness and ability of challenging their own beliefs and others helps create an open, intellectual atmosphere where anyone can share without feeling judged - which is an amazing environment to be in and a part of. This sequence would not be the same if it were two different professors teaching.

How has this class helped you in your other classes/future career?

This class has really helped open my perspective about the way I communicate, how I perceive myself and the way the world is oriented. Learning about communication and the art of listening through philosophical, practice and being in an open environment has brought so many different perspectives (whether that be from my peers or my two professors) that I wouldn't have even considered if I didn't take this course. This course has led to many meaningful discussions with my peers and has made me grow to appreciate even the smallest of things and to always think critically but with an open mind.

What is your biggest takeaway from your sequence?

That just because I may not always be the most talkative individual in the classroom, room, workplace, etc, that doesn't mean that I am not capable in my communication skills. Before entering this class, everybody stressed the importance of talking and having good dialogue but this class showcases that listening is powerful, silence is powerful, reading into nonverbal communication is powerful. Thank you Dr. Vélez Ortiz and Professor Giles for this sentiment.
