LAKERS TOGETHER: Find out how we're moving forward.
Honors at Grand Valley
The Honors College at Grand Valley is a place for students who want to make the most of their college experience. It's a place for students who enjoy the best of what school has to offer, including learning inside and outside the classroom, exchanging ideas and information with others passionate about academics, and taking advantage of the myriad opportunities available within a thriving university community. The Honors College is a place for students eager to explore their local, national, and global communities.
Before you can apply for admission to the Frederik Meijer Honors College, you must first be accepted to Grand Valley. Apply to GVSU.
The Frederik Meijer Honors College employs a holistic application process, which means that we consider the whole student, not just static indicators. In our application, we look for demonstrations of strong academic motivation and ability to achieve on a high level. The application asks you to show these through completing a self-assessment, listing academic and leadership accomplishments, writing a strong essay, and submitting a significant analytical or creative paper from high school. In terms of GPA and test scores, our normal expectation of high school applicants entering college for the first time is a 3.5 high school GPA and an ACT score of 28 or an SAT score of 1300. These are not firm requirements, however. In addition, because of the suspension of ACT and SAT testing in the spring and summer of 2020 due to the coronavirus, Grand Valley is not requiring ACT or SAT scores for Fall 2021 admission, so neither will we. If you believe the Honors College is the right place for you, please apply!
The Honors College also welcomes applications from students transferring from another college or university or from within GVSU. Our normal expectation is that transfer students will have a 3.5 college GPA.
All prospective students should review the Self Assessment for Prospective Students for characteristics of students in the Frederik Meijer Honors College. If these characteristics describe you, please apply. If you've already been accepted by Grand Valley and want to apply to the Meijer Honors College, complete the online application here.
Deadlines. While there is no official deadline to apply for the Honors College, we recommend that you apply as soon as you are accepted to GVSU. Here are three possible "deadlines" to consider:
- January 1: Participants in the Awards of Distinction scholarship competitions in December and January may be eligible for additional Honors-specific scholarships if they have been accepted into Honors by the time of the competition.
- March 15: In early April, we begin sending students information about registering for fall Honors courses. Course placements are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.
- May 1: The GVSU Housing office begins making housing assignments on this date, and only those already accepted into Honors are eligible for Honors housing.
We recommend applying as early as possible!
