Last week at the CLAS start-up meeting, Faculty Fellows Kristen Hedges and Len O’Kelly, alumnus Dane McAllister, and Dean Drake unveiled the outcomes of the summer visioning work including the CLAS Voyage. Combining the two signature initiatives into a promise to our students, faculty and staff, the Voyage focuses on the value of a liberal education that we provide our students by ensuring that every CLAS student experiences at least two high-impact practices during their program and is well equipped with and able to articulate their skills and experiences to tackle the challenges of the future through a first-year experience, capstone, and ePortfolio. Over the next three years, we will lay the groundwork to launch the Voyage, targeting the incoming class of 2025. This work is supported in the short- and long-term by CLAS faculty fellows and the emerging CLAS Center for Experiential Education and Community Engagement, directed by Kris Pachla.
Open Office Hours are scheduled for:
-
Monday, September 12, 2-3 p.m., MAK B-4- 243
-
Thursday, September 15, 11 a.m.-12 p.m., virtual
If you missed the start-up meeting, or want to reference the slides, please look at the CLAS Voyage webpage. There, you can submit questions or feedback on the Voyage, RSVP for the open office hours, and ask questions ahead of time. Feel free to reach out to Kris directly with any questions: [email protected]
2. Are you or any of your GVSU friends participating?
University Communications always highlights ArtPrize participation by GVSU employees and students, but it can be hard to find out every last GV person involved. If you or a colleague or a student (anywhere in GV, not just CLAS) will have art on display, please let us know. [email protected]
The flyer at the bottom of this newsletter describes the three things on which TRIO could use our help. Do you teach ESL? Can you donate a tie? Are you first-gen?

4. Student Success Strategies
Making Faculty Office Hours more accessible
Students have mentioned that they really appreciate having multiple places to find information about faculty office hours. To help your students know and use your office hours, in person or virtual, a wide net may need to be cast. While most faculty list office hours on syllabi and Blackboard, an even more thorough campaign may be in order. Listing these hours on your website profile page, automatic email signature, autoreply to emails, etc. will help ensure that no student finds you unresponsive to a request for an individual advising appointment or question about course materials.
Accessing Advisee Lists Via Navigate
Faculty can access a current list of assigned advisees through the Navigate platform. The instructions provide a step-by-step introduction to the report functions in Navigate and allows you to save this list for easy access in the future. This is also a great time to reach out to your students, especially the newest students, to share your contact information and office hours. The report provides the ability to either email the group or provide individual outreach.
5. 2022-2023 Call for Student Advisory Committee Members
The CLAS Student Advisory Committee for Dean Drake is looking for recommendations for student members majoring and/or minoring in disciplines within CLAS for the 2022-2023 school year. Our goal is to have a committee representative of our students. Student Advisory Committee members will be expected to be culturally mindful. They will also be expected to help Dean Drake think about how to promote an inclusive environment in CLAS for students. There are no GPA or class year requirements.
We prefer that you suggest student names and contact information to Mona Silva ([email protected]) by September 9, 2022.
6. Know a student who’d be interested?
Elena Lioubimtseva (GPY) is looking for two outstanding students (any major) to work with her this year on the role of philanthropy in equitable climate adaptation planning. This work is funded through her project with the Johnson Center. Each student will receive a $1000 stipend and travel funds as needed to present at the AAG or another conference.
