1. CLAS Voyage
RH2025 Showcase invitation:

On April 21, 2023, the President’s Office has invited all faculty, staff, students and community partners to a Reach Higher 2025 Showcase, celebrating the university-wide efforts in support of the three commitments of RH2025. To amplify the efforts of those engaged in high-impact practices in alignment with the Voyage, we are pleased to invite interested faculty and units to be a part of our coordinated submission, in addition to the many other RH2025-aligned efforts within CLAS. If you are interested in being a part of the Voyage presentation, please work with your unit head to let Kris Pachla ([email protected]) know by the end of the day today, February 22 with a description of your efforts. We will submit the proposal tomorrow, February 23.

Talent Link Student Recruitment
CLAS is pleased to be a partner in the Laker Accelerated Talent Link program, aimed at creating opportunities to elevate the value of a degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences while supporting our local employer partners. We are recruiting 25 students who are graduating in May or August 2024, particularly from CLAS and Brooks College to be a part of the inaugural cohort. Components of the Talent Link include:

  • A substantial employer-sponsored scholarship;

  • Earning a certificate in one of four areas related to business or technology such as Project Management or Applied Data Analytics;

  • Participating in a year-long cohort experience with other LATL interns to build relationships and share your experience with others;

  • Working in a 20-hour a week paid internship (paid at market rate) at a Grand Rapids-based company including Acrisure, Amway, Cascade Engineering, Corewell Health, and Michigan Software Labs;

  • The intent to hire by the employer for students who successfully complete the program.

If you know of a student who may be a good fit, please send them the link to express interest, which will allow us to follow up directly with them. Any questions can be directed to the email inbox [email protected].

Engagement Scholarship Consortium Annual Meeting – Call for Proposals
GVSU is now a member of the Engagement Scholarship Consortium. The Engagement Scholarship Consortium (ESC) is seeking proposals for its annual conference Oct. 4-5 in East Lansing, Michigan. The 2023 conference theme will be “Mobilizing Change through Engaged Scholarship.” The conference will provide a platform for intentional conversations about how engaged scholarship can lead to significant, positive impacts in the community and the academy. Proposals are due March 31.

2. Midterm Grading Reminder – From AD Betty Schaner ([email protected]

Midterm evaluations are the week of February 20 and midterm grades must be reported in the Banner grading system by 11:59 p.m., Monday, February 27. This is earlier than the posted deadline from the Registrar’s Office and allows the dean’s office staff time to clean up any last minute grading errors or missing grades. Some units may have earlier deadlines.

Midterm grades are required for all first-year students (including ALL new transfer students) who started Fall 2022 and for undergraduate students classified as less than good standing. Reporting grades in Blackboard does not meet the midterm grading requirement. Information on the process for reporting midterm grades is provided by the Registrar’s Office.

As a reminder, faculty can identify students who require midterm grades by checking the Class List Button on the Banner Additional Student Information page. You will need to log in with your GVSU network ID and password to access this site.

For parts of term courses, please use the grade reporting schedule developed by the Registrar’s Office.

Unit Heads are to notify Betty Schaner and Mona Silva of the designees for routing grading emails. In preparation for grading, please make sure your unit has current and accurate contact information for all faculty – tenured, tenure-track, affiliate, visitor, and adjunct – in case outreach is needed for missing grades.

Unit Heads and New Faculty Mentors, please check with new faculty members, including affiliate, visitor, and adjunct, to confirm they understand the grade submission process. With the addition of all new transfer students, faculty teaching upper-level courses should be aware that mid-term grades may be required for more students than in the past.

3. Safety Briefings
On Thursday, Director of Public Safety and Chief of Police Brandon DeHaan, will share detailed information about the plans and systems in place at GVSU that seek to keep you safe should there be an active shooting event. The Grand Rapids event will be held at 1 p.m. in the Loosemore Auditorium at the Pew Campus. The Allendale event will be held at 3 p.m. inside the Louis Armstrong Theatre at the Haas Center for Performing Arts. These briefings also will be viewable via Zoom and recordings will be posted online for you to watch at a time that works best for you.

All our units have emergency plans.  Most were last updated in 2016.  Units may want to review, and possibly revise, their plans in light of recent events and advice.  The College office can provide copies of unit plans if needed.

4. Vote for CLAS and University Committees through Friday, February 24 at noon

Voting for TT and AFF representation on CLAS and University committees will remain open until Monday, February 24 at noon.  You will find a link to the ballot on the Faculty Governance and Elections pages:

  Tenure Track Faculty Governance & Elections page

  Affiliate Faculty Governance & Elections page

 CLAS uses approval voting. Faculty vote for everyone they believe can “do the job” of the committee. If there are five candidates for two seats on a committee and all of them appear capable of embracing the work of the committee (based on their statements on the ballot), then you may vote for all five. The process is explained in more detail on the CLAS Nominations and Voting page.  If you have questions, please do not hesitate to write Sally Ross at [email protected]

5. Course Online/Hybrid approval required: Any course to be taught in online or hybrid formats must have OEMC approval for its format.  The list of course approvals is available at the Registrar's site under Faculty/Schedule Changes. (Note that all courses appear there; only the ones marked “Approved for Hybrid” or “Approved for Online” have been approved.)  Information on the approval process is available at The Approval Process.
