1. Laker Accelerated Talent Link
A new program for our students was announced to faculty and staff in Monday’s Lakers Ready:
In support of career-connected liberal arts and sciences education, Grand Valley State University is launching a work-and-learning program with a group of inaugural West Michigan-based partners designed to accelerate the connection between College of Liberal Arts and Sciences students and employers. The program, the Laker Accelerated Talent Link, will pair Grand Valley students with partner companies that will provide an enhanced co-op experience. An initial cohort of 25 students will work with the partners for one year and commit to one additional year of employment after graduation. Students also will earn a certificate in an area related to business or technology that best matches the employers’ needs with the employers providing scholarships for these certifications. The program will be announced publicly in the next few days and will launch in August of this year.
2. AWRI student internships and scholarships
The Annis Water Resources Institute (AWRI), located in Muskegon, MI is offering up to 8 undergraduate student internships for summer 2023. The full announcement and criteria for applying for these internships is available at www.gvsu.edu/wri/internships. The deadline for applying is 5:00 p.m. on March 6, 2023.
AWRI is also taking applications for a fall semester scholarship for undergraduate juniors, seniors, or graduate students – the Bill & Diana Wipperfurth Student Research Scholarship. This scholarship is available at https://www.gvsu.edu/financialaid/myscholarships-163.htm. Deadline for applying is March 1, 2023.
3. Science Olympiad Volunteer Opportunity
Thank you to the many CLAS faculty and staff who are helping the Regional Math and Science Center (RMSC) host GVSU’s 38th Region 12 Michigan Science Olympiad tournament on Saturday, March 18! You are invaluable! We are also in need of over 100 student volunteers to make this community event happen. Could you please inform your students of this opportunity? 5. Nominations for Faculty Governance Have Been Extended One Week (Until 2/13/23)
The CLAS Faculty Council elections subcommittee is extending nominations by a week as we need candidates for an additional 17 positions. We appreciate our many CLAS colleagues who are running in this election, as well as those currently serving on CLAS and University governance and advisory committees.
A list of openings, descriptions of what each committee does, and times/dates of meetings are listed on the CLAS Governance page.
Nomination acceptance and ballot statement
If you have self-nominated for a governance committee or committees, or you have received an email saying you have been nominated by a colleague, you will not appear on the ballot unless you accept the nomination on the acceptance form.
The acceptance form asks the candidate for a short statement to share on the ballot. Ballot statements will appear on the election webpage (for TT candidates, for AFF candidates) within about 24 hours of receipt—this is not an automated process.
Voting:
Election Ballots will be open from Monday, February 20 at noon until Monday, February 27, at 11:59 p.m.
If you have questions, please do not hesitate to write Sally Ross at [email protected]
