Dr. Nichols (Emily) has been an Associate Professor in the School of Social Work at Grand Valley State University since Fall 2017.  In addition to social work, Emily is a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT), with an emphasis on working with victims of sexual violence and intimate partner violence through trauma-informed interventions, and helping family members and romantic partners of victims appropriately respond to and cope with the trauma. Emily’s scholarship and community engagement is aimed at improving service delivery for victims of gender-based violence, specifically how college campuses can better respond to sexual violence.  Her research focuses on how federal guidances and policies influence the implementation of sexual violence investigation, intervention, and prevention services on college campuses, and how college campuses can more effectively met the needs of victims. Emily believes in building connections with her students, and believes that the student-faculty relationship is the primary factor in student success.
