Senior Thesis Checklist for Undergraduates
HNR 499 Senior Thesis/Project Checklist
Sophomore
____I have made connections with faculty in my major and talked with them individually about issues in our field.
____I have inquired about internship, undergraduate research, and/or study abroad opportunities in my
field.
____If I am not sure about all of the career possibilities that exist for people with my major and interests, I have visited the Career Center (206 STU)
____I have begun to think about issues and topics that engage my interest, and could be potential topics for HNR 499. I am on the look out for questions I would like to answer or problems I would like to solve.
____If I am interested in additional support for my research, I have investigated fellowships (see links in Honors Student pages). On campus, the McNair Fellowship provides support for those who are interested in graduate school, and are in groups underrepresented in graduate programs or those who are first-generation college students.
Junior
____I have talked with a faculty member in my major about the topic for my Honors thesis/project.
____I have an idea for an Honors thesis/project that will result in a substantial achievement I can write about in a job letter, a graduate school application, or talk about in an interview.
____I have talked with a faculty advisor in Honors about my idea for a senior thesis/project.
____If advantageous to meet my goals, I have considered how to combine my Honors senior thesis/project
with study abroad, undergraduate research, senior project credits in the major, or an internship.
____If my plan includes an analysis of statistical data, I have contacted the Statistical Consulting Center.
____If my plan involves interviews or studies in which other people participate, I have consulted with my faculty advisor about the University's requirements for Human Subjects Review.
____I have talked with faculty in my major about other individuals, faculty and/or professionals outside GVSU, who may have information related to my topic.I have also thought about how I can use my thesis/project strategically to contact these people and make positive connections in my field.
____I have investigated any centers, institutes, conferences, or special programs sponsored by Grand Valley, as well as community institutions, which might provide resources, a place to do my work, or become a client for my HNR 499 work.

April 1st for HNR 499 in summer and fall. Due by
November 1st for winter semester.
Senior
