Grand Valley received gold status in fall 2019 after completing a sustainability assessment developed by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education.

The Office of Sustainability Practices submits a sustainability report every other year for review, and has maintained its gold status consistently since 2013. Campus leaders said the gold status rating is a product of consistently trying to improve. For example, Facilities Services has been working to replace exterior pole lights with LED lights. To date, about 1,400 exterior LED lights have been installed across Grand Valley’s campuses.

The Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS) gauges the progress of colleges and universities toward sustainability in all sectors, including education and research, operations, innovation and planning, and administration and engagement.
