April 2026 Board of Trustees Update

On April 17, 2026, the GVSU Board of Trustees acted on several items related to GVSU-authorized charter public schools.
First, the Board approved the authorization of Greater Heights Academy, a charter school currently in operation in Flint. GVSU's authorization of GHA will start on July 1, 2026.
Next, the Board approved the reauthorization of the following three schools with the recommended lengths of their new charter contracts:
- Kalamazoo Prep Academy (3 years)
- The Greenspire School (5 years)
- Walker Charter Academy (7 years)
The Board also approved the appointments or reappointments of 68 charter school board members. GVSU is excited to welcome the following 10 individuals as new board members for GVSU-authorized charter schools:
- Matthew Barcey -- Greater Heights Academy
- Demetra Hyter -- Westfield Charter Academy
- Lamarcus Keels -- Greater Heights Academy
- Henry McClendon -- Washington-Parks Academy
- Jolie McKnight -- Greater Heights Academy
- Douglas Meeks -- Grand Rapids Child Discovery Center
- Marvin Miller -- Greater Heights Academy
- Nicole Runyon -- The Greenspire School
- Larry Simmons -- Washington-Parks Academy
- Philip Strom -- Grand Rapids Child Discovery Center
