On July 10, 2026, the GVSU Board of Trustees acted on several items that directly and indirectly impact GVSU-authorized charter public schools.

First, the Board approved the sale of the GVSU Detroit Center, located across the street from Comerica Park and next to the Detroit Athletic Club. The university initially purchased the building in 2012 and has used it to host events, workshops, and classes. The sale, however, comes after years of decreased use and increased challenges in parking and maintenance.

While GVSU is moving out of the Detroit Center, the university is expanding its presence in the city through partnerships with Michigan Central and several neighborhood community hubs. For example, the DEISS will be an active member of Anchor Detroit and the Durfee Innovation Society

For actions specifically related to GVSU's charter schools, the Board approved the appointments or reappointments of 41 charter school board members. GVSU is excited to welcome the following 10 individuals as new board members for GVSU-authorized charter schools:

  • Robert Cronk -- Crossroads Charter Academy
  • Janet Dreffs -- PrepNet Virtual Academy
  • Emma Gomez -- Old Mission Peninsula School
  • Jacob Hansma -- Walker Charter Academy
  • Chieata King -- PrepNet Virtual Academy
  • Kevin Kurgat -- Grand River Preparatory High School
  • Courtney Myers-Keaton -- Grand Rapids Child Discovery Center
  • Muhammad Qawwee - Windemere Park Charter Academy
  • Vanessa Pringle -- Greater Heights Academy
  • Cesaylee Reed-Porter -- Grove Montessori: A Wildflower Public School

The next GVSU Board of Trustees meeting will be on October 23, 2026.
