Complaints & Concerns

Grand Valley State University wants all student employees to feel safe, valued, and respected in their workplaces across campus. If you have a concern related to your student employment position(s), please let us know. We are here to listen. After hearing to your concerns, we will help you connect with one of the following campus resources. In some cases, we may be able to submit these reports on your behalf.

Office of Civil Rights & Title IX

If a student employee experiences, witnesses, or has been impacted by discrimination, harassment, or misconduct in their places of employment, we encourage them to file a complaint using the button below. These complaints could be related to a variety of concerns, including but not limited to the following:

  • sexual assault
  • stalking
  • sexual exploitation
  • bullying 
  • endangerment
  • hazing
  • discrimination based on a protected characteristic, or
  • harassment based on a protected characteristic

 

Report an Incident

Labor & Employee Relations

If a student employee complaint alleges that the GVSU standards of conduct are not being met by a faculty or staff member, Student Employment may submit a report to Labor and Employee Relations on your behalf. Examples of these instances may include the following:

  • lack of integrity or honesty
  • lack of fair and respectful treatment of others
  • behavior that negatively impacts the work environment
  • failure to follow GVSU guiding principles

Student Affairs

Student employees can click on the button below to learn more about filing a complaint with the Dean of Students Office. These complaints do not fall under the category of Office of Civil Rights & Title IX (OCRTIX) and could be related to the following:

  • inappropriate behavior of student supervisor or co-workers
  • disrespect from student supervisor or co-workers
  • unfair/unkind treatment from supervisor or co-workers
  • hostile work environment caused by other students
  • teasing by other students in the workplace
  • exclusion by student supervisor or co-workers

If a student employee believes they have experienced unfair treatment or lack of support by their hiring department due to a disability, we encourage them to contact SAR through the form below. Some examples may include:

  • denial of disability accommodations
  • refusal to accommodate medical needs
  • inaccessible workspaces or technology

CARE Report

If a student employee believes they are experiencing one or more of the following concerns, Student Employment will submit a CARE report on their behalf. This will allow the student to access the support, counseling, and/or resources they need. 

  • mental health concerns
  • excessive fatigue
  • excessive tearfulness
  • unprovoked anger or hostility
  • self-disclosed personal distress
  • suicidal thoughts
  • marked changes in physical behavior
  • social concerns

Human Resources

If a student employee believes they have experienced unfair wages, termination, or hiring practices by a supervisor, Student Employment may be able to partner with the Human Resources Office to find a resolution.
