Student Employee Handbook & Tips for Success
The Student Employee Handbook was created to be a one stop resource for student employees to locate important information related to their employment. It includes information regarding employee policies, regulations, employment forms, payment options, benefits, and so much more. This handbook is updated each year to ensure that all information is valid and up to date. If you have any questions after reading this handbook or believe that improvements could be made, please contact Student Employment.
JOB SCAMS
Job scam email are on the rise. We've all been there. You receive an email and if offers something that seems too good to be true. So, you click on the link or respond to the sender without taking a moment to consider if the offer is legitimate. If you receive a job offer through your student email address, take some time to check and decide if the email is a scam.
WATCH OUT FOR
- the sender can't meet in person
- they offer you a large sum of money for only a few hours of work per week
- they ask for your personal information
- they send you a check and ask you to deposit it into your bank account
NEVER
- click on links
- provide the sender with your personal information
- deposit checks
If you do deposit a check, contact your bank immediately.
WORKDAY
If you're looking for a job, Workday is a safe place to view available jobs and submit an application. All jobs on Workday are posted by legitimate, on-campus employers.
WHEN IN DOUBT
Forward the email to Student Employment. We'd be happy to take a look and let you know whether it's safe to respond to the job offer.
JOB SCAM EXAMPLE
Take a look at the email below that is a classic job scam. Notice the following characteristics:
- The sender name at the top of the email does not match the signature at the bottom of the email.
- The email is from an @gmail.com address, not @gvsu.edu. Keep in mind though, some scams do appear to come from an @gvsu.edu email.
- The position offers a weekly stipend of several hundred dollars.
- It asks you to click on a link to apply rather than searching for the job in Workday.
- When you hover over the link, it does not match the link copied in blue.
Keep an eye out for these types of emails and always forward to Student Employment before responding or providing information. Most importantly, NEVER deposit a check sent to you by a potential employer that reached out via email. Legitimate checks for legitimate on campus jobs will be processed and sent by the GVSU Payroll Office.
