Summary

The purpose of this research was to determine whether preservice co-teaching (student teachers teaching with experienced teachers) enhances the ability of expert teachers (experienced teachers) and novice teachers (student teachers) to work together regarding student social-emotional learning, which means learning to manage emotions, to show empathy, to maintain positive relationships, to manage their behavior, etc. The research was conducted at a West Michigan elementary school using a qualitative, quasi-experimental design. A survey was used to gather the reactions of three expert teachers and four novice teachers following professional development training in Restorative Practices (Restorative Practices refers to whole-school interventions designed to build a supportive environment through the use of communication approaches that aim to build stronger bonds among leadership, staff, and students, such as using “I” statements and encouraging students to express their feelings.) The findings, in general, supported the hypothesis that expert teachers and novice teachers can work together regarding student social-emotional learning. All expert and novice teachers found it beneficial to work together in the Restorative Practices training and reported that this training furthered their abilities to work together regarding student social-emotional learning.
