The School of Social Work is holding a Pause and Learn Series featuring speakers on current community topics and scholarly work.  Dr. Paola Leon, Director of the MSW Program, states that “the series is an effort to provide an informal space to bring together our school of social work community, connect with our students and engage in thoughtful dialogue.” The image shown here was taken from the first installment: Refugee resettlement: How can the School of Social Work community support Afghan individuals and families in their adjustment to life in West Michigan? Katie Carpenter, LLMSW from Bethany Christian Services, described the ways communities can help the incoming Afghan individuals and families.  Carpenter explained that the group faces additional obstacles due to their status as humanitarian parolees, rather than refugees, such as being ineligible for government benefits like healthcare and food assistance.
