What is the Investment Portfolio Organization?
The Seidman Investment Portfolio Organization (IPO) is the premier collegiate investment organization at GVSU with roughly $180,000 assets under management (AUM). The organization is fully student-run and focused on long-short opportunities in equity markets. Members have the opportunity to be placed into a sector run by a Portfolio Manager as well as two Senior Analysts. These sectors are vertical to those represented in the S&P 500. At the end of each semester four analysts are selected to compete in the Stock Pitch. The ultimate goal is to outperform the market and give students a solid foundation for their future endeavors in the financial services industry.
What Does Being A Member of IPO Look Like?
Each sector is led by one Portfolio Manager and two Senior Analysts, with general Analysts working under their leadership. A new member will begin as an Analyst before applying to a larger role. An Analyst conducts company and industry research, performs financial analysis, develops investment ideas, and practices working towards presenting their Stock Pitch. Members may voluntarily choose to be placed inside an industry sector.
The two Senior Analysts act as mentors to the junior Analysts by reviewing their research and contributing their own research. of their own, Senior Analysts also help to support the Portfolio Manager in developing an investment recommendation. The Portfolio Manager, often known as a PM, will lead the sector, train Analysts, oversee investment strategy, guide research, and help evaluate any and/or all investment opportunities.
General members are welcome to attend any meeting throughout the semester as they build their financial literacy through speaker content and other networking events. Meetings typically take place on Thursdays at 6:00 PM.
Analyst Training Program (ATP)
The Analyst Training Program (ATP) has recently been modified and is now a five 5 week program to prepare analysts for the Stock Pitch. The training is five weeks and is designed to introduce new analysts to the fundamentals of investment research and prepare them for the Stock Pitch competition. In week one, Analysts will first begin to learn about careers in finance, what IPO can provide them with, and how IPO can give them an edge over non-members. The second week is designed to provide Analysts with professional development, teaching them how to optimize their resume and LinkedIn, how to network, cold-outreach, and prepare for coffee chats, as well as provide interview preparation for finance-specific questions.
The final three weeks of this program will teach analysts how to use investment vehicles, financial statements, and select a stock. This includes learning the basics of valuation, and selecting the right investment vehicle to best cater your needs and goals. Financial statement literacy is crucial for analysts, as they will use their chosen company’s financials for valuation. Finally, analysts will learn how to select a stock, what a “multiple” actually means, and learn about the differentiators in values as well as sector and industry.
How Does the Stock Pitch Work?
Portfolio Managers ultimately decide who is selected to compete in the Stock Pitch; however, analysts are usually selected by a series of practice valuations, mini-pitches, and overall team chemistry and commitment. When picking a stock, the first few weeks may include researching potential investments in order to make an investment proposal. Participants conduct quantitative and qualitative research about their company, and use valuation methods to determine whether a company represents an attractive investment opportunity.
The four analysts participating in the Stock Pitch will present their findings at the end of the semester and defend their investment proposal before a small panel of industry professionals. Judges evaluate participants based on their presentation, understanding of the company and industry, valuation technologies, as well as their knowledge and ability to answer questions.
The Stock Pitch Competition: Applying What You Learn
Twice each academic year, IPO members have the opportunity to put their investment knowledge into practice through the Stock Pitch competition. Analysts research publicly traded companies in their industry sector and develop an investment recommendation supported by financial and industry analysis. Throughout the process, they evaluate a company’s financial performance, conduct a SWOT analysis, identify potential risks and opportunities, and apply valuation methods to determine whether a stock represents a worthwhile investment. Selected analysts then present their findings to a panel of industry professionals who will evaluate their research, valuation methods, and their ability to communicate and defend their investment thesis. The competition allows students to gain relevant experience and demonstrate their technical skills while receiving direct feedback from professionals in the financial industry.
Connecting Students With Industries
Beyond technical skills that members develop, IPO provides valuable connections to firms and professionals throughout the Grand Rapids area. Through relationships with local companies and alumni, members gain access to more internship opportunities and professional connections that can take them one step further in their careers. Some firms actively seek IPO students when recruiting, because they recognize the emphasis on developing students with professional skills and technical knowledge crucial in finance. Executive board members have also secured internships through these connections which demonstrates how involvement in IPO can create opportunities.
IPO’s alumni network further strengthens these opportunities by connecting current members with graduates. Members can reach out to alumni for career advice, learn about different professional paths, and build relationships with those in their desired field. Alumni also have the opportunity to contribute back to IPO by helping students prepare for employer expectations.
The organization's emphasis on professional development is reflected in its recent employment outcomes. According to Gabe Vasquez, Senior Vice President of IPO, all 15 of last year’s graduating senior class secured job placements. This achievement highlights the importance of relationships, experiences, and professional preparation IPO members gain.
IPO Member Spotlight: Gabe Vasquez
For Gabe, a junior studying Finance and Economics, IPO has provided opportunities to grow both professionally and personally. After joining the organization, he progressed into a leadership role as a Portfolio Manager, serving in that role for two semesters and leading teams through two successful Stock Pitch competitions. His experience also extends beyond IPO, where he has gained exposure to portfolio operations and deal team execution through professional opportunities with Blackford Capital and AUXO. Now serving as Senior Vice President, Gabe continues to build on those experiences while helping create similar opportunities for other members.
When asked what accomplishments he is most proud of, Gabe pointed to his time as a Portfolio Manager and the success of the teams he led. Both teams he guided won their respective Stock Pitch competitions, and every member who pitched under his leadership has since joined IPO’s executive board. He credits this outcome to the motivation and commitment he brought to leading his teams, as well as his desire to help other students gain the same valuable experiences that IPO provided him. For Gabe, leadership means more than just winning the Stock Pitch; it means helping others grow their confidence, skills, and connections to pursue their own goals.
Gabe believes one of IPO’s greatest strengths is its ability to connect students with opportunities they may not find on their own. He explains, “IPO lets you see the right doors and open [them]... It’s not [only] about what you know, it's also who you know and [your] experiences.” Gabe also values the friendships members develop along the way, and he emphasized that the organization creates a community of students who share similar interests and want to help each other succeed. IPO helps students build relationships through the alumni network, industry connections, and learning experiences that can extend beyond their time at Seidman.
