The most helpful aspects of my undergraduate education in mathematics were: My math degree taught me how to use logic to solve difficult problems. I am challenged each day with difficult decisions. Using sound, consistent logic to make decisions is critical with my role. As an undergrad at GVSU, I was also involved with the Math Club and Pi Mu Epsilon. Participating with these clubs and taking on leadership roles within each of them also prepared me to work in a professional environment where leadership skills and relationship building are keys to success.

The advice I’d offer to current undergraduate students in mathematics: Your math degree is preparing you to be thought leaders of the future, and there are endless opportunities for you. Take time to explore career possibilities and find a career that will challenge and grow not only your technical skills but your leadership skills as well.

In a typical day in my work, I: lead a team of software developers with a goal of developing modern data pipelines for Auto-Owners. My current role requires knowledge of the data vertical and awareness of trends in the industry. We strive to have the appropriate architecture and technology stack that will most efficiently deliver accurate, meaningful data to our data analysts. I also guide software developers throughout their career. Through mentoring and coaching, I work with software developers to achieve their career goals with Auto-Owners.
