Kylie Klunder
Graduation Year: 2020
Major(s) and minor(s): math major, business minor
Post-grad education: attended The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City for acting
Current position: Freelance Digital Marketing Manager
Employer: Coast Media Co.
The most helpful aspects of my undergraduate education in mathematics were: While my freelance work utilizes both math and business, most of my competitors only have a business background. Because of my math background, I tend to get more clients, since it proves that I understand the numbers.
The advice I’d offer to current undergraduate students in mathematics: Talk to people in the industry, reach out to people on LinkedIn, do some research on different types of jobs that use math. Get creative in your search - there are so many jobs and opportunities out there that pay very well that I never knew existed before (including freelance work!). Really take time to think about what you want to do - just because something doesn't explicitly say "requires a mathematics degree" doesn't mean your skills wouldn't be valuable to the role!
In a typical day in my work: I co-founded a company during COVID doing freelance digital marketing work for businesses. I have a handful of clients, doing different work for each of them - analytics, advertisement campaigns, running social media accounts, SEO, web design, etc.
Other thoughts/comments:I live in Los Angeles now (benefits of remote / freelance)!
