Dr. Sara Sutton Awarded International Comcast Innovation Fund Grant to Advance Quantum Cybersecurity Research

As quantum computing continues to reshape the future of technology, Dr. Sara Sutton, associate professor in Grand Valley State University's College of Computing, is helping ensure the networks we rely on every day are ready for what's next.

Sutton has been awarded a highly competitive Comcast Innovation Fund grant to support her research project, "Quantum-Aware Software-Defined Networking (SDN) Security." The internationally competitive award recognizes outstanding technical research with the potential for meaningful scientific and industry impact. Only a small number of proposals from researchers around the world are selected for funding each year.

The project explores how quantum computing techniques can strengthen the security and resilience of critical Internet and mobile network infrastructure. As cyber threats become increasingly sophisticated, organizations that operate large-scale networks must protect essential services without disrupting the connectivity that individuals, businesses, and communities depend on.

"This research is about preparing today's networks for tomorrow's challenges," explains Sutton. "By exploring innovative approaches to quantum-aware network security, we can help Internet service providers build more secure and resilient infrastructure while advancing the next generation of cybersecurity research."

The grant will allow Sutton and her research team to move beyond foundational research by strengthening connections between academia and industry. They will work to address emerging challenges at the intersection of quantum computing and cybersecurity.

The project will also create hands-on research opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students, giving them experience with emerging technologies while contributing to solutions for real-world cybersecurity challenges.
