Combined Degree Programs (B.S./M.S.)

Qualified GVSU undergraduates can be admitted to a combined bachelor’s/master’s program and obtain both a B.S. and an M.S. within an accelerated time frame. Students admitted to these programs will dual-count up to 12 credits of graduate work to satisfy the requirements for both the undergraduate and graduate degree. This saves not only a semester's worth of time, but more than $10,000 by taking graduate classes at undergraduate prices.

Combined Degree (B.S./M.S.) Process

  1. When you are about to finish 55-65 credits as an undergraduate, apply for one of the B.S./M.S. programs listed.
    • The application will ask about a 'date of entry'. This is not when you start the combined degree, but when you will be considered a graduate student. You will become a graduate student when you've either (1) completed your B.S. or (2) completed 12 graduate credits.
  2. Talk with the College of Computing Undergraduate Advising Center to create a plan to finish your B.S. The advising office will also identify opportunities to take graduate courses in place of undergraduate courses.
  3. Talk with the Graduate Program Director (GPD) of your intended master's program to fill in the rest of your classes for your M.S.
  4. Share your plan of study with the College of Computing Graduate Programs Coordinator at [email protected].
  5. Register for courses knowing that overrides will likely be required since Banner will think you are still an undergraduate student. Your Graduate Program Director will approve the overrides.

Application Requirements

  • 3.00 GPA overall
  • 55-65 hours of credit completed or in process

Policies

  • There is an 8-year time limit to complete a graduate-level badge, certificate, or degree. However, the 'clock' starts when you take your first graduate course and will not include your solely-undergraduate years.
  • After completing 120 credits and all requirements for the bachelor’s degree, students are awarded a bachelor’s degree. A minimum of 21 graduate credits must be completed after the 120 credits of the bachelor’s degree. All other master’s degree requirements must be met, including a graduate capstone course.
