Computer Science Student, Cellist, and Undergraduate Researcher

Elijah Smith is a man with many talents.

Elijah started his studies at GVSU in the Fall of 2017, after bringing 30 credits of advanced placement courses. He is currently majoring in computer science and is pursuing a minor in music as well. Elijah plays the cello and he is a member of the Grand Valley Symphony Orchestra.

In the summer of 2019, Elijah started doing research on a new algorithm to solve a computational geometry problem called the Discrete Voronoi Diagram. With the guidance of Professors Byron DeVries and Christian Trefftz, he has implemented a new algorithm and compared its performance with other existing algorithms. His research resulted in a paper that was accepted at the 20th Annual IEEE International Conference on Electro Information Technology (eit2020). IEEE sponsored the conference as they are the world’s largest technical professional organization for advancing technology today. Elijah presented his results in August of 2020.  Elijah was also the recipient of a Michigan Space Grant Consortium for this research project. The Michigan Space Grant Consortium is sponsored by NASA.

Both Professor DeVries and Professor Trefftz have said “working with Eli on this project was very rewarding. Eli is a rigorous, creative and thorough person.”

Elijah’s paper can be read at the IEEE Conference publication link here.
