Off-Campus Learning Resource Guide

Off-Campus Learning includes educational experiences that take students beyond the classroom, lab, or studio. Whether through study abroad, domestic study away programs, field-based experiences, or international virtual exchange, these opportunities immerse students in new environments and perspectives while fostering the meaningful learning outcomes associated with High-Impact Practices (HIPs).

Study abroad programs help students develop a sense of global citizenship by exploring cultures, life experiences, and worldviews different from their own. Through the exploration of complex social dynamics, including issues related to racial, ethnic, and gender disparities, as well as pursuits for equality and freedom, students are equipped with the skills to navigate an interconnected and multifaceted world. This exposure fosters a deeper understanding of different cultures, promoting acceptance and open-mindedness towards diverse customs and traditions. Furthermore, students are challenged to embrace unfamiliar situations, fostering valuable attributes such as adaptability and independence.

International Virtual Exchange connects GVSU students with peers at universities around the world through faculty-led, course-based collaborations. Students work together virtually on projects and activities while building intercultural competence, communication, problem-solving, and digital collaboration skills.

Field Trips and Field-Based Experiences extend learning beyond the classroom through immersive academic experiences in local, national, or international settings. These opportunities help students engage with new places, cultures, and perspectives while reinforcing course learning. Depending on the design, off-campus experiences may also incorporate other High-Impact Practices (HIPs), such as collaborative projects, learning communities, community-based learning, and service learning.
