• 18 CreditsPhilosophy is the study of fundamental questions about existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language.
Philosophy challenges assumptions, encourages deep reflection, fosters community, and creates learning opportunities beyond traditional classroom structures. The philosophy program is designed for students who are interested in examining life's deepest questions and applying this study to the community and world.
Students seeking a minor in philosophy are invited to work out an appropriate program with any member of the department. Potential course topics include aesthetics, Eastern philosophy, ethics, logic, social and political philosophy, and more.
The program emphasizes the history of philosophy as a foundation for further study and application, offering courses in major contemporary schools of thought and non-Western traditions. Faculty-led study abroad programs, like the GVSU Summer School in China, provide unique opportunities to explore Chinese culture and philosophy. Additionally, programs like the Undergraduate Teaching Apprentice Program and the Philosophical Society of GVSU offer enriching out-of-classroom experiences.
Students seeking a minor in philosophy are invited to work out an appropriate program with any member of the department. The program must include a minimum of 18 hours of philosophy, at least six hours of which must be upper-division (300- or 400-level), and at least one course must be chosen from PHI 400, PHI 420, PHI 430, PHI 440, PHI 450, PHI 460, or PHI 470.
