Philosophy is the study of fundamental questions about existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language.
Philosophy challenges assumptions, encourages deep reflection, fosters community, and creates learning opportunities beyond traditional classroom structures. The philosophy program is designed for students who are interested in examining life's deepest questions and applying this study to the community and world.
Core coursework includes aesthetics, Eastern philosophy, logic, ethics, and the works of great philosophers. You will also delve into social and political philosophy, preparing you for various intellectual and professional pursuits in the field.
The program emphasizes the history of philosophy as a foundation for further study and application, offering courses in major contemporary schools of thought and non-Western traditions. Faculty-led study abroad programs, like the GVSU Summer School in China, provide unique opportunities to explore Chinese culture and philosophy. Additionally, programs like the Undergraduate Teaching Apprentice Program and the Philosophical Society of GVSU offer enriching out-of-classroom experiences to expand your philosophical knowledge and community.
