Mathematics is the study of numbers, patterns, shapes, and structures, focusing on logic and quantitative reasoning.
The secondary certification emphasis (grades 6-12) in math is designed to prepare future educators to teach middle and high school mathematics. Graduates enter the teaching profession with a deep base of mathematical knowledge and a wealth of practical experiences with lesson planning, instruction, classroom management, and assessment and evaluation, and they are well-versed in curriculum standards (e.g., Common Core Standards, NCTM Standards) and educational research.
You will engage in mathematical modeling, programming, calculus, and differential equations while honing your mathematical reasoning and communication skills. The program includes probability and statistics, discrete mathematics, and linear algebra. Students participate in research and project-based applied mathematics while exploring advanced topics like abstract algebra and analysis.
Students develop sought-after skills through hands-on experience in critical thinking, mathematical modeling, and coding. The math program offers research opportunities, study abroad, and internships for credit. The nationally recognized faculty, many award-winning, continuously advance their teaching, and the department is acclaimed for innovative approaches, receiving national recognition for its teaching excellence.
