Programs of Study, Certificates, and Badges
Current State
Currently students use Banner to change a program of study (major/minor). Declaring a certificate or badge is a separate process within Banner. Students are not prompted to enter any effective or completion dates.
Future State
With Workday, students can make changes/additions to program of study (major/minor) and certificates/badges within Workday using the Change Program of Study process. Students will be required to enter a program completion date; however, students are not expected to know this date. Help text will instruct students to input any date, and that date will be automatically overwritten behind the scenes to ensure it is correct.
When Will This Change Take Effect?
- Program of study will be viewable to current students when they begin Workday onboarding in December 2026.
- Students may begin submitting changes in Workday once Workday becomes the system of record for a student’s academic record. This date is TBD, likely in March 2027.
- Declare date may not be accurate until the Fall 2027 semester.
- New students will confirm their program of study with an Advisor or Records & Registration staff at orientation. New students will be able to modify their program of study at the beginning of the semester in which they start – for the Fall 2027 semester, beginning 8/15/27.

Benefits
- Additions and changes to majors, minors, certificates, and badges are all completed within Workday using the Change Program of Study process.
- Students will have the ability to change their program of study via mobile device.
Potential Challenges
- For certain certificates and badges, additional approval is required. Students need to complete a questionnaire and may finish the Change Program process without completing the questionnaire. If so, there will be a task in the student’s Workday My Tasks folder to complete the questionnaire.
- Students are prompted to enter a program completion date which they may not know.
- New students will not be able to declare or change their own program of study on their own until the beginning of their first semester at GVSU.
