Registration Errors and Registration Holds

Please see the tables below on why you may be receiving a Registration Error or a Registration Hold.

Registration Errors

This information will help students understand what their registration error or registration hold means, and what actions to take to resolve them.

Class Restriction

Enrollment in the course is restricted by class standing (Freshman, Sophomore, etc.). Current attempted hours are included in the calculation of student standing for prerequisites.

You must complete the following number of credit hours or request a MAJ registration override through myBanner. 

Freshman: 0-24 credits

Sophomore: 25-54 credits

Junior: 55-84 credits

Senior: 85+ credits

Closed Class - No check box is present to add the class to the student's schedule

The class has reached enrollment capacity.

Choose another open section, add yourself to the waitlist, or students in extreme circumstances may submit a request for a CAP registration override through myBanner.

Corequisite Required

Corequisite courses must be taken at the same time.

You should register for both co-requisite courses at the same time. In the event that you do not require both co-requisite courses to be taken at the same time, you can request a PRE registration override through myBanner. 

Duplicate Registration

Students are registered for the same course in multiple semesters. 

You will receive an email notifying you to drop the duplicate section. If you do not drop, you will be dropped by the Registrar's Office from the latest instance. You can also request a DUP registration override through myBanner based on your circumstances. 

Field of Study Restriction

Only students in a specific program of study are permitted to register for this course.  

You may submit a request for a MAJ registration override through myBanner.

Level Restriction

Only students at a specific degree level (undergraduate, graduate, or doctorate) are permitted to register for this course.

You may submit a request for a MAJ registration override through myBanner.

Linked Course Required

Certain lectures, labs, and/or discussions are linked together. When registering for a class that requires multiple components, you must register for all the linked pieces simultaneously.

Click on the section's CRN to determine linked sections. If you attempt to register for a linked course and register for a lab only, your lab will be dropped. Click here for instructions on how to swap lab sections without having to drop your lecture or discussion section.

Major Restriction

Only students in certain majors are allowed to register for this course.

Maximum Hours Exceeded

The student has attempted to register for more than the allowed number of credit hours in a single semester. For undergraduate students, the maximum number of credit hours is 20 per semester. For graduate students, the maximum number of credits hours is 15 per semester.

As an undergraduate student, you must submit a Drop/Add form with your advisor's signature, along with a statement explaining why you need to take a higher credit load. Requests should be submitted to the Student Academic Success Center (STU 200) for a decision. As a graduate student, you must obtain permission from the dean of the appropriate college.

Prerequisite Not Met

The student has not satisfied the prerequisite(s).

Prior Approval Required

Enrollment in this section of the course requires special approval.

You may submit a request for a PMT registration override through myBanner.

Repeat Count Exceeds 0

The student is attempting to register for a course they have already repeated once.

You must acquire the signatures of their advisor and the chair of the department that teaches the course on the Repeat Limit Approval form and turn it in to the Registrar's Office.

Student Attribute Restriction

Only students with a specific program related attribute are permitted to take this course. 

You may submit a request for an ATT registration override through myBanner.

Time Conflict with (CRN)

The student is attempting to register for two courses that have meeting times that overlap.

You must acquire the signatures of both professors on a Drop/Add form and turn it in to the Registrar's Office.

To view any holds on your account take the following steps: Login to myBanner; Select "Student"; Select "Student Records"; Select "View Holds".

Academic

Student previously dismissed from GVSU for academic reasons.

For undergraduate students, you must meet with your advisor, complete the petition to return form, and provide supporting documentation to the Registrar's Office at [email protected]. The Academic Review Committee will receive and review your appeal and notify you of their decision.

For graduate students, you must contact the director of your graduate program.

Accounts Receivable

There is a past due balance that needs to be paid in full.

Contact Student Accounts at (616) 331-2209 to resolve your account balance and have the hold lifted.

Admissions 

The student has no verification of a Bachelor's degree.

You need to send proof of a Bachelor's degree, which is generally a transcript with the degree listed. For International Students, this would be a copy of the degree certificate. Contact the Admissions Office at (616) 331-2025 or [email protected] for additional information and to have the hold lifted.

Advisor Approval Hold

Student is in less than good academic standing and must meet with an advisor prior to registration.

Meet with your advisor to develop a class schedule. Obtain the signature of your advisor on a Registration Drop/Add Form and submit it to a Student Assistance Center or [email protected] to have the hold lifted. Click here for a short video on how to locate your advisor in myBanner. 

Dean of Students

This hold is very broad and could be for a variety of reasons dependent on circumstances.

Contact the Dean of Students Office at (616) 331-3585 to resolve and have the hold lifted.

Owes On Delinquent Account

There is a past due balance that needs to be paid in full.

Contact Student Accounts at (616) 331-2209 to resolve your account balance and have the hold lifted.

Past Due Balance

There is a past due balance that needs to be paid in full.

Contact Student Accounts at (616) 331-2209 to resolve your account balance and have the hold lifted.

Past Due Perkins Loan

There is a past due balance that needs to be paid in full.

Contact the Long-Term Loans Office at (616) 331-2209 to resolve and have the hold lifted.

Re-entry Required

Student has not attended GVSU in two or more semesters. 

Contact the Registrar's Office at (616) 331-3327 to update your personal information or submit the petition to return form to [email protected].

Athletics Hold

Student athletes must receive athletic advisor approval to adjust their schedule after advanced registration.

Contact Athletics at (616) 331-5272 to resolve and have the hold lifted. 

Student Conduct

This hold is very broad and could be for a variety of reasons dependent on circumstances.

Contact the Office of Student Conduct and Resolution to resolve and have the hold lifted
