Rec Fest 2021 promotes the importance of recreation, wellness at GVSU

Students from all across campus attended the annual Rec Fest event on Thursday, August 26. The event, hosted by Recreation & Wellness, promotes participation in programs and events that allow students to be active. The event is open to all students, but focuses on getting first year students involved.

Each of RecWell’s four program areas hosted activities for attendees. Participants won prizes for participating in any event, with over 400 prizes given out. Kona Ice was also available for attendees, which was a great treat on such a hot afternoon.

Intramural Sports hosted a variety of yard games for students, including cornhole, spikeball, yard pong and giant Connect Four. Information about becoming an intramural sport official, and how to sign up for a league was available. Some students even won discounts on upcoming intramural sports passes.

Outdoor Adventures provided opportunities for students to engage through slacklining and hammocking. They also led a hike through the Ravines for interested participants. The Climbing Center was also open during the event for open climb.

Students could learn about wellness opportunities with the Wellness Information Team (WIT). In addition to learning about upcoming events, WIT gave out 1,344 condoms, lube or dental dams to promote the importance of sexual health.

Information about fitness opportunities, including UFit, group exercise and training classes, was available for students. Participants took part in mini fitness classes, including yoga, TRX and HIIT. The full group exercise schedule can be found on RecWell’s website.

Recreation & Wellness’s mission is to “enhance and engage the GVSU community by providing inclusive and diverse recreational opportunities that inspire participation, promote health and wellbeing, and encourage student development and success.” Check out gvsu.edu/rec or the events calendar for upcoming ways to get involved, be active and live healthy.
