Unrecognized Student Organizations
Purpose
Grand Valley State University (GVSU) values student engagement and believes that participating in recognized student organizations enhances the overall educational experience. Recognized student organizations are officially registered with the University and receive access to resources, support, and opportunities that help foster safe, meaningful, and inclusive involvement.
This statement is intended to educate students about the benefits of joining recognized student organizations and to clarify the status and implications of joining unrecognized student organizations.
Recognized vs. Unrecognized Organizations
A recognized student organization (RSO) is one that has successfully completed the University’s registration process and remains in good standing. RSOs receive a range of benefits and privileges, including but not limited to:
- Access to funding and financial support
- Eligibility to reserve campus spaces and host events
- Access to leadership development programs, training, and advising
- Inclusion in official University marketing and promotion channels
- Eligibility to recruit members through University-sponsored events

An unrecognized student organization (USO) is one that:
- Has not completed the University’s registration process, or
- Previously held recognition but lost it due to conduct, risk management, or policy violations, or
- Operates independently of University oversight and support.
Understanding the Difference
While students are free to associate with any organization, including those that are unrecognized, GVSU strongly encourages students to carefully research any organization before joining. Unrecognized student organizations:
- Do not have access to University advising, training, or resources.
- Are not monitored by the University for safety or compliance with policies.
- May engage in activities that do not align with the University's values or community expectations.
- Are not covered by University insurance protections during events or activities.
- Choosing to participate in an unrecognized organization may involve additional personal responsibility and risk.
Organizations That Have Lost Recognition
The following organizations have had their registration removed through established University processes and are currently not recognized at GVSU.
Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity | Epsilon Beta Chapter
- Registered student organization status revoked indefinitely Fall 2024 for the following violations of the Student Code:
- Hazing
- Alcohol
- Abuse of the Conduct Process
- Violation of any University Policy
