I studied abroad in Shanghai, China for six weeks in Summer 2018 with GVSU's China Summer School program. It was faculty-led, and we really got to experience what Chinese city life was like. I could talk forever about how great it was to be able to jump on the metro and go anywhere, eat at a different restaurant every day for lunch and dinner, and pet all of the stray cats that the city provided food for. I learned a lot about Chinese philosophy and living a slower lifestyle even while in the city environment, and especially about the importance of appreciating what is around you. The Taoist idea of letting the river of life take you where it wants you to go really influenced my time spent in Shanghai, surrounding cities, and briefly Beijing. and changed how I live my life now. I am a more mindful and curious person today because of my China Summer School adventure!
