Philomena V. Mantella | President

At Grand Valley State University, our commitment to positively impact our learners and our community remains unwavering, even as the landscape of higher education faces rapid shifts and global uncertainty. In fact, in times like these, our purpose becomes even more critical.

This steadfast focus is reflected in how we adapt and lead. We are continually evolving our academic programs and course offerings to align with the needs of today’s economy and prepare students for the opportunities of tomorrow.  Since the start of the year, we’ve added six new degree programs, and we are continually talking to our community partners to make sure our students have the skills and real-world experience to contribute on day one.

That same commitment guides our efforts to deliver exceptional value. GVSU remains in the bottom quarter for cost of attendance for public universities in the state, and we are diligent in how we invest the resources entrusted to us. In May, I testified before the Michigan State House subcommittee on Higher Education and Community Colleges to highlight our leadership in providing the highest return on public investment in Michigan. It was an important moment in our ongoing push for a funding structure that rewards innovation, responsiveness, and growth.

In all of this work, collaboration is key. Our region, our state, and our world face big challenges and no institution can meet them alone. That’s why I’ve recently taken part in panel discussions in Washington, D.C. and Denver.  At these events, I’ve proudly showcased GVSU’s model for successful industry collaborations and learned from others who share our goal of forging stronger connections between education and the business community.

The current moment is only strengthening the passion our faculty and staff feel for our work. It is a privilege to prepare future leaders and decision-makers. Your continued support is essential in this journey as together we build a university that doesn’t just respond to uncertainty but instead seizes the opportunity to make an impact that will be felt for generations.
