Dr. Caleb Doan just published an article in a special issue of Poe Studies, titled “Archipelagic Poe—Foreign in a Domestic Sense” (now available on Project MUSE). In “Poe’s ‘Vast Island-Studded Ocean,’” Dr. Doan surveys Poe’s transpacific writings in the 1830s and explores how “MS. Found in a Bottle” and The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym offer coded warnings about the dangers of Western imperialism. With discussions of a “Cannibal Show” in Baltimore and representations of Oceania in antebellum literature, the article illuminates new literary and historical connections between the US and Pacific worlds.
