Research Interests
My research interests include pre-service teacher preparation for culturally responsive and sustaining literacy instruction, including authentic reflection on one’s own cultural background and literacy experiences to uncover how these shape and influence current perspectives on teaching and learning, and of students, families, and communities.  I am interested in how the best of what we currently know regarding both sociocultural and cognitive views of literacy can be leveraged to ensure ALL students thrive. My dissertation research focuses on how one West Michigan elementary school, in a district with a large percentage of multilingual learners, leverages the strengths and supports the needs of newcomer students and their families.
