Combined Degree Programs (B.S./M.S.)

Qualified GVSU undergraduates can be admitted to a combined bachelor’s/master’s program and obtain both a B.S. and an M.S. within an accelerated time frame. Students admitted to these programs will dual-count up to 12 credits of graduate work to satisfy the requirements for both the undergraduate and graduate degree. This saves not only a semester's worth of time, but more than $10,000 by taking graduate classes at undergraduate prices.

Combined Degree (B.S./M.S.) Process

  1. Speak with your undergraduate advisor. They will help you create a plan of study to complete your undergraduate degree. They can also help you identify up to 12 credits of graduate courses that will fulfill both the undergraduate and graduate degree requirements. Please keep in mind that the semester that you complete your BS degree, or complete 12 credits of graduate coursework, will be the last semester you will pay undergraduate tuition.
  2. Speak with the Financial Aid office to see if taking graduate courses will impact your financial aid, and if there is any financial aid that may help with your graduate degree.
  3. Apply to a combined degree program (gvsu.edu/apply). The application will ask about a 'date of entry'. This is not when you start the combined degree, but when you should be considered a graduate student and start paying graduate tuition. You will become a graduate student when you've either (1) completed your BS degree, or (2) completed 12 graduate credits.
    1. If a combined degree does not exist between your current undergraduate degree and your desired graduate degree, complete the Student Initiated Combined Degree Request Form.
  4. Review the College of Computing’s Graduate Student Handbook for general information about being a graduate student.
  5. If you have questions or need help completing a plan of study for your graduate degree, reach out to the appropriate Graduate Program Director (GPD). You can find them at on the College of Computing’s Leadership Page.

Application Requirements

  • 3.00 GPA overall
  • 55-65 hours of credit completed or in process

Policies

  • There is an 8-year time limit to complete a graduate-level badge, certificate, or degree. However, the 'clock' starts when you take your first graduate course and will not include your solely-undergraduate years.
  • After completing 120 credits and all requirements for the bachelor’s degree, students are awarded a bachelor’s degree. A minimum of 21 graduate credits must be completed after the 120 credits of the bachelor’s degree. All other master’s degree requirements must be met, including a graduate capstone course.
