Top 6 Ways to Help Your Student

Number 1

Ask them questions

Asking open-ended, non-leading questions are a great way to encourage your student in their career journey. Give these a try:

  • What are you good at?
  • What are some ways you can gain experience on campus?
  • Have you checked out the Career Center website? Made an appointment with a career advisor?
  • What do you know about the world of work?
  • As it relates to career, where do you want to go? How will you get there?
  • When are you going to do an internship?

Encourage your student to connect early and often with the Career Center

We love when first year students come to visit us!  They can get to know their career advisor, and then follow-up with the same person throughout their time at GVSU.  Students can schedule an appointment via our job system, Handshake. They are also welcome to connect with us on our various social media platforms and to listen to our new podcast!

Number 3

Encourage your student to attend events

Events are a great way for students to learn about majors, fields, industries, etc.  The Career Center coordinates a variety of events throughout the year which gives students a chance to learn something new or meet employers.  You can even suggest they listen to our podcast!

Keep an open mind when your student talks about their future career

Even if you don’t agree that their choice is what is best for them, it is ultimately their decision. If you have concerns with their choice go back to number one and start asking questions.

Number 5

Share your network

Everyone you know, both personally and professionally, could serve as a networking resource for your student. Encourage them to talk to family members, friends, community acquaintances – any working professional that can provide some perspective on their job, role, company, industry, etc.

Help them find information

The Career Center has a plethora of resources to help your student in taking action on their career plan.  We’ve corralled these resources in one place for ease of use here.
