March in the Career Center
April 01, 2026
The academic year is nearing its end, but the GVSU Career Center is
far from done offering resources and opportunities. This month
involved a total of 23 events and over 32 participating employers. To
meet with these employers, over 210 students attended, making this
another month full of new opportunities and valuable connections. Read
on to Engage, Connect, and Discover more about how we helped Lakers
have a successful March.
Engage
While there are many GVSU students looking to go into healthcare,
the goals and experiences of each student are different. To make sure
every student feels supported, we held two different healthcare events
this March. On March 4th, we had the How to Gain Healthcare Experience
event. During this event, GVSU hosted a panel of healthcare employers
to share information with students about paid, volunteer, and job
shadowing opportunities at their organization. This was a fantastic
opportunity for employers to connect with the 95 attending healthcare
students and showcase opportunities. For healthcare students seeking
educational opportunities rather than job opportunities, March 25th
was the Health Professional Graduate School Fair. At this event,
students were able to meet with colleges and universities from around
the state and country to learn more about advanced degree opportunities.
The GVSU Career Center is committed to supporting our alumni, and we’re always bringing forward new initiatives to add to the variety of resources and programs we offer. Recently, we’ve introduced two initiatives: our ongoing Alumni Webinars and the upcoming Career Design Fellowship.
Connect
The Alumni Webinars were created in partnership with Alumni
Relations. These webinars are monthly informational sessions focused
on different career topics, ranging from creating a resume to dealing
with burnout to starting a business. Each webinar is led by an expert
career coach from our Career Coaching Database whom alumni can connect
with afterwards. The next webinar will be on April 15th, and all past
webinars can be found on the Alumni
Relations website.
The Career Design Fellowship was brought to GVSU in partnership with Alumni Relations and Mission Collaborative. This program is a month-long group course for alumni who are looking to pivot careers. Making a change in a career path can be intimidating, so this program aims to provide alumni with all that they need to feel confident in their skills, resume, and future. Alumni meet weekly throughout May to work through the curriculum as a group, and they have access during the program to the Mission Collaborative career coach and professional network. At the end of the program, alumni are given a bundle of career resources that they can use moving forward. Early enrollment is open now until April 11th, and regular enrollment is open until April 27th. For more information, check out the Mission Collaborative website.
Discover
Making connections with employers is one of the most helpful
things a student can do when job searching, but “making connections”
is easier said than done. A great reason for students to reach out to
employers is to schedule an informational interview. Informational
interviews are formal or informal discussions with a professional
whose role or industry is one of interest to the student. Not only are
they great ways to establish connections and build a professional
network, but they also serve as opportunities for the student to learn
more about the industry they want to go into. We offer plenty of
resources related to informational interviews on the Career
Center website that you can share with your students, including
message templates for reaching out and lists of questions to ask
during the conversation.
