September in the Career Center

The Fall semester has just begun here at GVSU, and the campus is filled with students once again! The Career Center kicked off the semester with 64 events across campus, and over 100 employers got involved to connect directly with Lakers. With over 1,300 students attending these events, it was great to see so many students meet and interact with employers in their desired fields. Read on to Engage, Connect, and Discover more about how we helped Lakers start their semester strong this September!

Engage

On September 11th, the GVSU Office of Civic Engagement and the GVSU Career Center held the Non-Profit Volunteer & Internship Fair. This event connected students with representatives from over 40 nonprofits around West Michigan so that they could learn about their volunteer and internship opportunities.

It can be difficult for students to find opportunities that match their current experience level, so this event was a great chance for students to learn about positions created with them in mind. It was also a great chance for students to speak face-to-face with employers who shared their interests. At the same time, employers could speak with students and find passionate volunteers and interns who wanted to get involved.

Connect

This month, the Career Center welcomed five new interns to the team!

Sofia: Sofia is the Writing and Communications Intern. A junior Writing major, Sofia serves as the lead editor for the Career Center Monthly newsletter, the Employer Edge newsletter, and the Career Community newsletters.

Callie: Callie is the Adult & Alumni Marketing and Social Media Intern. A junior Marketing and Finance major, Callie collaborates with the Career Center marketing committee to support Adult & Alumni career resources.

Brody: Brody is the Marketing and Social Media Intern. A junior Marketing major with a sales emphasis, Brody handles the Career Center social media efforts across Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, and Facebook.

Shea: Shea is the Outreach and Promotions Intern. A senior Advertising and Public Relations major, Shea leads the tabling efforts of the Career Center, traveling among campuses to promote the Career Center.

Denys: Denys is the Data and Statistics Intern. A senior Statistics major with an actuarial emphasis, Denys analyzes Career Center data and creates surveys, reports, and visualizations.

Discover

Last year, the Career Center began encouraging the use of the career exploration tool RAIN. RAIN is a completely free resource designed by students for students to help in their job search. Its features include personalized job recommendations, an application tracker, related employers to connect with, interview preparation tips, and more.

Along with these features, there’s a new Explore tab that students at any level can use to find out specific information about their desired industries. For example, students can see the average salary for entry-level positions, rather than one overarching range. They can also look at a realistic recruiting timeline and practice real interview questions sourced from past interviews in the industry.

We recommend that you sign up for an account and take a look, so that you can support any Lakers who come your way asking about their future careers!
